Cedarhurst Awarded Grant to Fix Parking Lot

Village gets $75,000 to rehabilitate lot by Maple Plaza.

The Village of Cedarhurst has been awarded a $75,000 grant to fix up the parking field at the intersection of Central and Maple avenues, according to a release from Nassau County.

“Cedarhurst is grateful to our county executive, Edward Mangano, for a $75,000 Community Block Grant,” Cedarhurst Mayor Andrew J. Parise said in a release. “This grant will provide the funding to rehabilitate Parking Field #6, which will include drainage, streetscaping, lighting and paving,”

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for the municipal Parking Field #6 project is a continuation of previously CDBG funded projects that included downtown street and parking improvements.

“From downtown revitalization efforts to improving parking, these funds help strengthen our communities and jumpstart the local economy,” Mangano said.

He added that the project shows how local, county and federal government can work together.

“The parking lot on Maple and Central avenues is in the very heart of the Five Towns, and its upkeep is vital to the quality of life of residents and Central Avenue shoppers,” Legislator Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence) said.

The CDBG Program is a federal entitlement program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique development needs. CDBG funds can be used for a wide range of activities related to housing, economic development, commercial revitalization, public services, infrastructure and public facilities.

The Nassau County Office of Community Development annually issues a Notice of Funding Availability and accepts applications from member municipalities and other eligible applicants for CDBG grant funded activities.

“In today’s economy, it can be difficult for local municipalities to make necessary, but costly, downtown improvements,” Sen. Charles Schumer said. “Therefore, I’ve always been a proud supporter of the CDBG program and commend the partnership between Nassau County and the Village of Cedarhurst to improve the village’s downtown shopping district.”

Those aren't Nassau County parking meters; I don't believe the County actually have any parking meters. Those are Village of Cedarhurst parking meters.

People would need to convince Mayor Parise and the Village Board to get rid of them; the meters belong to Cedarhurst and the Village takes in its revenue.

The flip side of having no parking meters is that people may choose to sit in the spots all day.
