Closest Movie Theater to Five Towns May be Redone

Lynbrook officials in talks with Regal on possible building of state-of-the-art facility.

Regal is in talks with Lynbrook officials to build a brand-new movie theater on Merrick Road in Lynbrook, where one of the closest theaters to the Five Towns now stands.

"I can confirm that Regal Entertainment Group is currently evaluating the possibility of theater construction in Lynbrook," said Russ Nunley, vice president of Marketing and Communication for Regal Entertainment Group. "About two years ago, we opened a new theater not very far away in Suffolk County, and that new theater at Deer Park has been very warmly received by moviegoers. So Regal is excited by the possibility to replace our United Artists Lynbrook 6 with a larger and brand-new facility."

No official deal has been reached between any of the involved parties, which would also include a developer.

A new movie theater reportedly would incorporate the property currently being used by a jeweler and a restaurant on the west side of the building, and possibly even the current movie theater parking lot. Discussions have taken place between the village and Regal regarding space and parking concerns.

According to Lynbrook Trustee Hilary Becker, the board has agreed to commit $300,000 for a satellite parking system, which would allow moviegoers to use GPS to find vacant parking spots in the area.
Before leaving the mayor's office for the state Assembly this month, Brian Curran said the village will benefit tremendously from having a new movie theater that will help draw residents and non-residents to Lynbrook's downtown area.

"Because it is my belief, and I think it is shared by the board, that a brand-new movie theater down there will ignite a 10-year to 15-year business boom for the downtown, similar in the way that the Fantasy movie theater in Rockville Centre did it in the 90s for Rockville Centre and so on," he said.
