FREE Mold Removal Kits Available to Residents

In an effort to assist Nassau County residents who are being impacted by mold caused by water damage from Hurricane Sandy, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano will distribute mold removal kits at Disaster Recovery Centers in four south shore communities.  

The kits contain basic items necessary to ensure that mold is eliminated and does not reoccur.   

It is important to note that in some cases of mold cleanup, professional services may be required for successful remediation. 

“In partnership with the Red Cross, my administration is distributing free mold removal kits to our residents to facilitate a healthy cleaning process.  Together, we can address mold problems while protecting residents from any ill effects,” said County Executive Mangano. “Cleaning a home to remove mold must be done properly to avoid harmful exposure.  I urge any resident who continues to cope with mold to pick up one of these kits from a nearby Disaster Recover Center and use the items to protect themselves and their homes.”

Mold became a critical health concern after neighborhoods withstood unprecedented water damage from the October superstorm.  Some homes had to be gutted and removed.  Some homes faced considerable indoor mold growth requiring immediate attention.  Mold growth can cause serious health problems such as coughing, eye irritation, rashes, congestion and breathing issues.

The kits, which will be distributed beginning Saturday, April 6 until 3 pm, contain detergent, a cleaner with bleach, sponges, goggles, gloves and a respirator face mask. Four Disaster Recovery Centers remain open to deal with ongoing issues related to Hurricane Sandy.  Hours of operation at the Centers are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  

Sites include:  Island Park Village Hall in Island Park, Long Beach Recreation Center and Ice Arena in Long Beach, Cedar Creek Park in Seaford and Freeport Recreation Center in Freeport.

If not remediated properly – with proper cleaning and maintenance – or if new moisture gets into the air, or the environment, mold will come back.  It’s important to use the ingredients in this kit to stop mold spore growth, especially as we move into warmer, more humid weather.
