UPDATE: Cop Hit By Car on 878, Suffers Serious Injuries

Cop airlifted to hospital after accident just north of Atlantic Beach Bridge.

A Nassau County police officer was hospitalized Tuesday after being hit by a car on the 878 just north of the Atlantic Beach Bridge.

At 11:35 a.m., a 57-year-old officer conducting vehicle and traffic law enforcement was struck by a 2004 Audi that was being driven by a 43-year-old man, police said. He sustained multiple injuries including a fractured skull, fractured pelvis, fractured right leg and massive internal bleeding and was airlifted to a local area hospital by the Nassau County Police Aviation Unit.

A 9-year-old boy and a 20-year-old woman were also in the Audi at the time of the accident. No additional injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing. The Audi was impounded for a safety inspection.

Route 878 was closed in both directions during the investigation and was reopened at 4 p.m.
