Police: Woodmere Man Took Part in Attempted Burglary

Also allegedly stole gun from home in Baldwin.

A Woodmere man was arrested for allegedly stealing a rifle and then being involved in an attempted robbery with the weapon, police said. Later, an Elmont man allegedly fired the gun at a victim in Woodsburgh.

On Wednesday, Feb. 20, police said that Nazir Babury, 20, of Elmont, and Jason Mifsud, 36, of Woodmere, allegedly gained entry into an Anderson Street home in Baldwin and took a rifle.

Then, on Friday at 6:16 a.m., a 54-year-old man was asleep in his Kirkman Avenue home in Elmont when he heard his front doorbell ring, according to police. When he went to the door, he heard a loud bang and someone trying to break in.

The victim held the door shut, and one of the subjects’ threatened the use of a weapon. The victim screamed and the two subjects, one armed with a rifle, fled the scene in a silver Honda driven by a third subject toward Meacham Avenue. No injuries were reported.

Additionally on Friday, Babury and a 22-year-old male victim were in a 2011 Mazda on Woodmere Boulevard South in Woodsburgh. Police said an argument ensued and Babury removed the rifle from the trunk of the vehicle and allegedly threatened the victim. The victim ran and the defendant allegedly fired a round that missed the victim. Babury then got back into the vehicle and fled the scene.

Babury, Mifsud and Dujon Ellis, 22, of Laurelton, are charged with first-degree burglary and criminal use of a firearm in the first degree for the attempted robbery. Babury and Mifsud were also charged with second-degree burglary for allegedly stealing the rifle, while police also charged Babury with first-degree reckless endangerment in the shooting incident.
