After the death of former New York Knick and Woodmere resident Sid Tanenbaum in 1986, former Nassau County Human Rights Commisioner Syd Mandelbaum started a foundation and annual basketball tournament in his name.

The 4-on-4 half-court tournament aims to improve relations among Nassau County residents while attracting some of the county's best talent year after year.

This year, the tournamment featured both an over-40 division and an open division. Winners received gear donated by the New York Knicks.  The tournament is free to all participants and relies on donations from the players and stores within the community to cover the cost to run the event.  Modell's, Walls' Bake Shop, Island Bagel Bar, The Bagelry, Starbucks, Apple & Eve, and others all made generous donations.

The Sid Tanenbaum foundation gives scholarships to both boys and girls at Lawrence High School, Hewlett High School, Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway, and Lawrence Woodmere Academy.  Since 1987, selected scholar athletes have received over $27,000 in scholarships.
