All above by the original writer notwithstanding it is morally reprehensible that people who did ,Read More do not, would not send their children to public school but rather private school, religious or secular, sit on a public school board of education. They are there for one reason only ;to keep taxes as low as possible because those that elect them carry private school tuition. That is NOT an acceptable reason to direct/control/guide the education of public school students. Any position put forward that disputes this as the basis for parents of private school students being on a BOE is a lie.

lilly, i just created a group on Facebook (Hewlett-Woodmere District 14 Budget Discussion) forRead More residents of district 14 to share and question. Maybe someone on the board will look at it. Please tell your friends. A copy of the budget is uploaded and can be reviewed. I believe residents should make informed decisions. Read it and see what jumps out at you and looks good, fishy, or just normal.
lilly May 19, 2013 at 03:36 pm
thanks Shirley- we have to keep posting to vote NO for the budget- I try to go to meetings and it isRead More ridiculous to hear how no one comes to the table with ideas of how NOT to SPEND our money! If there were only more people that would attend and stand up and speak up maybe it would change.
Shirley Hanein Lane May 19, 2013 at 02:39 pm
Lilly, you are so correct that there are so many houses for sale and stores for rent. Who wants toRead More move to a district that looks like a ghost town? And let's not forget about the homes that were affected by Hurricane Sandy? People are still rebuilding. Download the budget from the district website and go over it item by item. You will see that the increases are mainly in textbooks and retirement, bus matrons, and BOCES, not "for the Kids" as the lawn signs say. District 14 is so used to getting what they ask for because no one bothers to read the budget. Many residents have drunk the Kool-Aid and would never question the decisions of the administrators or the School Board. And NOT ONE of the candidates mentions FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY! They seem to think that residents are an endless fount of money, when is that going to change?!?!?

What browser are you using Boomie? We suggest either Firefox or Google Chrome. Perhaps that wouldRead More make it better.

The new Patch is hard to read. Can you darken the text?

Thanks for the comment! I believe the nearby Patch feature will return eventually.

What a joke! The whole south shore is a toxic dump after Sandy.

That is not true. Pageants open a door for girls/woman to speak out and help out. There are manyRead More different types of pageants to chose from. Not all are about beauty alone. Miss Long Island 1997 Also a Lupus and domestic violence Survivor

We should be teaching our daughters to love and respect themselves and pageants do not do that.Read More Feel like a queen? How about a judge or an architect? As the mother of a disabled daughter, I am appalled by this.

It is time County and State reps coordinated an effort to change the manner in which NYS RealRead More Property Law 460,the Clergy exemption on PRIVATELY owned homes, is implemented in Nassau County. All across the state the exemption is $1500 as the law states. Through Nassau's screwy assessment process that exemption gets INFLATED to as much as $14,900 in our school district. The average for the more than 40 exemptions in UFSD #14 is over $12,000. Over 30 home owners pay NO school taxes...you pay for them. clergyexemption@gmail.com

That's why a larger development around a new world-class venue would have been ideal. The problemRead More with always going for the "hi-tech, bio tech and pharam" is that you're looking at specialized advanced degree jobs. Nothing wrong with that but we need well paying blue collar jobs too. Bring back industry. Why aren't we a leader in next-gen products for automobile, home and aerospace? Have the white collar jobs but also many blue collar jobs in production. And how about taking the empty commercial lots and vacant big box buildings and create jobs through vertical and greenhouse farming? Year-round agriculture and local access to fresh foods. Again, instead of being a consumer suburb, become a producer suburb once again.
Frank April 8, 2013 at 07:26 pm
"hot dog and peanut vendors" are note my idea of well-paying permanent jobs. When LI wasRead More the cradle of aviation, you had legions of scientists, engineers, machinists, mechanics, etc... REAL JOBS that pay REAL WELL... That age is gone... What Nassau needs is an industrial renaissance... Hi Tech, Bio Tech, Pharma... anything that will spur economic success. BTW why hasn't Nassau explored the possibility of creating a food terminal in Uniondale? That alone would provide hundreds of jobs and reduce truck traffic!

National party platforms don't count for very much in local politics, nor should they. So forgetRead More about defining the GOP as the party of "limited government" and having that mantra apply to the Hub situation. As this morning's bipartisan arrests shaped, local politics is about money and access to the ballot. If the right palms had been greased, the right players involved, it would have happened. Personally, I don't mind that Wang's plan failed, he has no development experience and he's a crook who relied on the statute of limitations to avoid jail. The fact is that his own firm turned around and tried to sue him after he stepped down. By the way, the GOP is the party of massive government subsidies to industry. Exactly how do you reconcile that with this idea of limited government?
Bryan Korman April 17, 2013 at 06:22 pm
Well said, Rob. You hit the nail on the head! I would add that the Conservative Party is just asRead More bad. They march in lockstep with GOP. There is no longer any noticeable difference between the two.

Canon received about $100 million in government aid, including tax breaks from New York State andRead More Suffolk County, and an extra lane on each of the Long Island Expressway service roads. In return you got not new jobs, but just a relocation of existing jobs from four offices in Lake Success and one in Manhasset. Canon “hopes” to add 750 more jobs within 10 years. Wait and see if that happens. Bottom line is that you paid Canon $100 million to keep, not add, 1300 jobs, about $80,000 a job. What a good deal. Wee Little Heart, is that all you got.

I think that there is a lot of truth to what Stevo has to say. The first time we see someone, weRead More see him or her the way that they really appear, you might say. After that, our perceptions are colored by our feelings. If we like the person, his or her good features will come to the fore and that person will grow in attractiveness esp. if we continue to learn about their wonderful personal qualities. I remember meeting someone whom, at first glance, I thought was very attractive but with time, when I learned she wasnt nice at all [ and I wasnt the only one who thought that], I never saw her as pretty again. Pretty is as pretty does, as the old adage goes. Inner beauty radiates to the outside. It is something to remember.
