New York American Water & National Association of Water Companies Provide Scholarships to Local High School Students

MERRICK, N.Y. (June 12, 2014) –  For the fourth year in a row, New York American Water awarded four $2,500 scholarships to local high school seniors as part of a program for students interested in pursuing a career in the water utility industry or related fields. Scholarship recipients were:

·         Christopher Parnell of Valley Stream, who attends Valley Stream South High School. Parnell will be attending St. John’s University in the fall, and hopes to major in chemistry and physics.


·         Georgina Hudja of Atlantic Beach, who attends Lawrence High School. Hudja will be attending Cornell University in the fall, where she hopes to major in environmental science.

·         Matthew Romeo of Massapequa Park, who attends Massapequa High School. Romeo will be attending Hofstra University in the fall, where he hopes to study mechanical engineering.

·         Kenneth Varghese of Wantagh, who attends Wantagh High School. Varghese will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the fall, where he will study aerospace engineering.

The scholarship program is part of an outreach effort by the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC,) of which the New York American Water is a member.

“These students represent the future of the water industry,” said Brian K. Bruce, Vice President of New York American Water, and a New York Chapter of NAWC board member. “That future depends on students like these who are, like those of us in the business today, passionate about the sciences.”
