Hunger continues to be a year-round issue on Long Island. In excess of 300,000 Long Islanders, including more than 110,000 children face the risk of going hungry every day. And while visits to local food pantries typically increase during the winter holidays, more people on Long Island are relying on charities for food assistance throughout the year. Each week, approximately 65,000 people in Nassau and Suffolk Counties visit local feeding programs for help. Cuts to food-stamp benefits and continuing economic uncertainty is placing an increased burden on the ability of food banks and other charities to meet the growing demand.
