Town S.T.O.P. Program protects environment by helping neighbors dispose of pollutants properly

Town of Hempstead Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad  were joined by Legislator Howard J. Kopel as they brought the popular S.T.O.P. program into the Five Towns.

The Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) program provides area residents with a safe, environmentally sound method of disposal of the many hazardous materials found in the average home.

By bringing toxins such as antifreeze, old paint, used gas tanks, drain cleaners and pesticides on any of the scheduled S.T.O.P. collection days, neighbors can make a significant contribution to the protection of our precious groundwater supply and the preservation of our bays and estuaries.

For a limited time, S.T.O.P. is also collecting old incandescent light bulbs and exchanging them for FREE with energy efficient bulbs.  Homeowners may also bring their old thermostats containing mercury to a S.T.O.P. event, helping to keep mercury out of the waste stream.  For this, they will receive a $5 gift card to a local home center compliments of Covanta Energy.
