Promoting Racial Harmony in the Name of MLK

Temple Israel holds ninth annual Martin Luther King, Jr., commemoration.

's commemoration of the life and achievements of Martin Luther King, Jr., for the ninth year brought together on Sunday both Jewish and African-American community members.

A good crowd filled the pews to see the keynote speakers — Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, executive vice president of the New York Board of Rabbis, and the Rev. Victor Hall of the Calvary Baptist Church in Jamaica, Queens — share their feelings on one of the nation's greatest civil rights leaders.

"He was a remarkable man," Hall said of the legendary King. "He was an inspirational voice for the civil rights movement in this country. There was so much he had accomplished both as a Baptist minister and social activist before his life was cut short in 1968."

The Calvary Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir also performed alongside Temple Israel's cantor, Galina Paliy.

"I was really moved by the reverend's words," said Annette Barnes, who came from Jamaica for the ceremony. "I've seen such a big stride in racial equality in my lifetime and I really felt it here today."

Longtime temple member Betty Ann Kahn of Hewlett was moved by Potasnik's words. "He spoke of planting the seed. Making the world a better place for others before we leave," she said. "I thought that was a very strong message."

The event, which was organized by the Temple Israel's spiritual leader, Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum, is the largest coalition of synagogues and Jewish organizations in America celebrating the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., according to the temple. There are 31 organizations involved including Temple Israel.

"We come together on this day as a sisterhood and brotherhood with our Jewish and African-American communities," Rosenbaum said. "We celebrate our spirit in diversity as well as with our solidarity."
