Chabad of Hewlett Opens Doors to New Home
Organization had been running for a year out of rabbi's home.
Rabbi Nochem Tenenboim, director of Chabad of Hewlett, welcomed each person into the organization’s new home at 1160 Broadway in Hewlett on Sunday morning, offering drinks and food to everyone.
“There will always be someone here,” he said of the corner storefront. “The Chabad is a place for everybody, a place anybody can walk in any time of day.”
With close to a year of operation, Tenenboim said that Chabad of Hewlett’s operations have been based out of his home, or venues that were rented. Many of the Chabad’s events have been successful and they are “receiving a lot of positive feedback from the community,” he added.

The inauguration had plenty of food, drink, music, merriment and even a bit of dancing led by the rabbi.
Sunday also featured the writing of a new Sefer Torah by fourth generation scribe Rabbi Moshe Klein.

“It’s written freehand” with a turkey feather and natural ink, Klein explained. He noted that there are 304,805 letters, 248 columns, and 62 sections in the Torah.
“It takes 10 to 12 months to finish. Each letter should be perfect,” he added.
He said after Sunday, the Torah would be flown to Israel to be finished. According to Jewish law, no letter can touch or the Torah cannot be used in a Temple.
Igal Bitton, who owns the event planning business next door, loaned his office space to the party to have a family friendly area for children, where they decorated cookies in the shape of the Torah and mezuzah case covers.
Hewlett resident Mordechair Maman came out to show support for the growing Chabad.
“I’m very happy to be here,” he said.
