Heavy snowfall begins Friday evening with as much as 10 inches expected by morning.

A major blizzard that was set to arrive Friday evening is expected to dump over a foot of snow on Long Island.

The snowstorm may bring winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph and possible white-out conditions, making for dangerous driving conditions. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid traveling.

The Town of Hempstead has declared a snow emergency and urged residents to park their cars off the street.

There's also the potential for trees and power lines to be brought down by the winds and heavy snow, resulting in outages.
