New Businesses: Baby Boutique Comes to Cedarhurst

Treat your baby to top-of-the-line clothing and accessories.

Within just one year of starting her baby clothes venture, Esther Miller moved her new business, Lavish Layette, from a small operation she ran out of her Woodmere home into a big storefront that rests in the heart of Cedarhurst’s business district.

Shortly after setting up her home business, Miller built up a small but loyal group of customers who urged her to expand and move to a traditional storefront setting. According to Miller, it was good advice. In just two months of opening up at 426 Central Ave., she has expanded her customer base and business is growing steadily.

“Since I’ve been at my new store, my business is getting so much exposure,” she said. “It’s been an incredible experience so far. This is a great location, because there is constant foot traffic.”

The bulk of her products are exclusive imported brands from all over the world, including France and Switzerland. Blankets, shoes, hooded towels, bibs, crib sheets, hats and pajamas are all available up to size 18 months. By summertime, she plans on expanding her stock to size 24 months.

Miller said that in addition to offering high-end quality brands that aren’t available in most stores like Babies-R-Us, she allows customers to exchange anything they buy without a strict time limit, unlike other stores that require exchanges within 30 days. In addition, her store credits never expire, another policy she said differs from some other retailers. Also, free delivery is offered anywhere in the Five Towns and Far Rockaway.

The store’s Facebook page is updated regularly with posts about incoming shipments of popular new merchandise; Miller plans on having a website created soon. She is optimistic about the future of her business and looking forward to the spring and summer seasons.

“I think this will be a great time of year for my store,” she said. “With the nice weather coming, it’s not just moms and grandmothers coming into the store alone. They’re all starting to bring in the babies with them. On nice days you can see people pushing baby strollers all over. It’s like a baby parade, which is great, because I love babies.”
