New Businesses: A Homey Hewlett Salon Rising From Sandy

Written by Allison Howe

Although there are already several well-established beauty salons in the immediate area, Therese Knopf felt she could bring something new to the table with her cozy salon in Hewlett, which embodies a lot of warmth and charm that some of the larger facilities don’t have.

The homey décor and furnishings of Just Therese’s as well as the owner’s genial personality are all very welcoming. She calls her shop a “relaxation spa,” because customers can enjoy being pampered in what feels like the comfort of their own home. Services include manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials and eyelash extensions.

The business had previously been run out of Knopf's Oceanside home until it became uninhabitable after Hurricane Sandy. A few months ago, she started putting her life back together, now living in Woodmere and working out of her new storefront at 1188 Broadway. She said she is excited about getting a fresh start and encouraged by the support of many old customers who followed her from Oceanside to Hewlett.

“I really tried to turn my new place into a welcoming environment where people can feel right at home, and I’m getting some really nice positive feedback from people who just walk in off the street to check out my place,” she said. “I am also trying to be flexible with what my shop can offer to my customers.”

Knopf also welcomes input from customers in order to tailor her shop to their needs and explore new trends. Some recommendations that she is trying out include hosting small facial parties for adults and children’s salon celebrations. She is also toying with the idea of offering permanent make-up in the future, another suggestion from a client.
