Senior's, Al Steiner's, A.J.'s and Friends (in Atlantic Beach), Pies Plus, Wilshire's, Warner Baer, Friendly's, CARVEL (okay, not a restaurant, but a local place), Romeo Pizzeria and Restaurant (definitely rivaled Gino's), Cedarhurst Diner, the original Pancho's in the shack, Spice of Life, the Bounty Inn, the Wine Press, Last Chance Cafe, the OLD Sherwood Diner (and Sal). Cafe Naturale in Woodere had the best vegetarian food I've ever eaten. What memories!

Is there a hat store on Central Avenue? I agree about the silver stores, but Sterne has been there for a long time. And there are no wig stores, but there are hairdressers who do wigs. Adapting to the needs of the consumer and all that.
5TResident July 27, 2012 at 05:25 PM
Look at the bright side - you still have Mother Kelly's.
Carmela Soprano July 27, 2012 at 06:55 PM
Wig shops? There's plenty. Yali's Wigs, The Wig Shop, Aviv's, Yael's, Rachel's, etc. are all dedicated wig shops. Others are salons that also sell and/or style wigs as well. Sheitel Heaven! LOL!

Friendly's for sure, and the Bounty Inn (great prime rib), Al Steiner's, all very fond memories. Shore's - ha, don't make me laugh! I miss Buttermill Bakery (even if I always preferred Walls), Carmel's kosher takeout in Far Rockaway, and before cafe Espanol, the magnificent if under-appreciated Pompeii Ristorante.

Matteo's was nice. Now I have to go to Howard Beach to have dinner there or Long Beach. Friendly's was good for taking out the kids. Now I have to go to Baldwin if I want ice cream. I can remember when I was little there was a Beef Steak Charlies where Marshalls is now. LOL Those were the good old day's. Now it's very interesting around here.

HG Epstein's was an amazing deli. Mauro's had incredible pizza. Used to enjoy eating at Justin's, too... Very sad that these places are gone.

Thought I'd be the only one to remember Cairo's and the Wine Press! Best part about the Wine Press was my friend Joey would take us there for lunch once in a while since it was around the corner from #2 School. Nice to have a friend who's father owns a place like that! Cairo's too. I barely remember going there though. I'll go along with Wetsons too! My kids are like, who? Beefsteak Charlies-some fun dinners there. Sam Pan and Epsteins-forgot all about them too. Man, you guys are good but here's 1 for you-there was a place where Burger King now sits (at least it was BK before I moved 8 years ago) in Hewlett that once was a 'car hop' type place-can't remember the name as I was way too young but I bet my brother or sisters remember.
The Merz August 05, 2012 at 03:50 PM
It was called Shore's and it had a mini-Nathan's based theme with amusment rides inside the place. And way before that it was called the Holly Arms, which was a fancy resort at the turn of the century...now those were the days!
The Merz August 05, 2012 at 04:00 PM
Also in A.B.: Let's not forget Danny Chang's, Bambino D'lino, Gerards, La Golet where Chez Peter was and not too long ago Atlanic Beach Pizza which is the current spot of K.C. Dilla Jones which was originally in Long Beach.
BVH August 05, 2012 at 10:01 PM
And don't forget Cartoons in Hewlett, late 70s early 80s, at the site where Dulce Confections is. And before it was Friendly's in Woodmere it was Bernie's Diner., across the street from the then Woodmere Junior High South.
BVH August 05, 2012 at 10:04 PM
I believe Archies was at the site of Alexanders
