Urgent Care Facility Opens in Hewlett

The Five Towns’ first-ever urgent care facility, Urgent-MD, started seeing patients earlier this month, giving residents a cheaper and more accessible option for medical emergencies than nearby hospital emergency rooms.

“Urgent-MD's purpose is to provide immediate walk-in medical care for illnesses and injuries that cannot wait for an office appointment, but are not life-threatening or serious enough to require hospital emergency care,” said Deanna Goldberg, of Urgent-MD, located at 1220 Peninsula Blvd.

“Before Urgent-MD, there were no hospitals or other urgent care centers within the Five Towns, and patients often had to travel out of the area to receive immediate medical care," she added. "Now, Five Towns residents can get the right care, at the right time, close to home.”

The most common procedures at urgent care facilities include Rapid Strep Test, flu and mono testing, X-rays, casting, splinting, stitches, urinalysis and physicals, according to Goldberg. Urgent-MD, which is open every day, features an on-site lab and “minimal-radiation” digital X-ray.

Urgent-MD’s medical director is Dr. Robert van Amerongen, who served as director of the Pediatric Emergency Service at New York Methodist Hospital, a volunteer EMS physician for Chevra Hatzalah ambulance corps and medical director of Chai Lifeline and Camp Simcha.

The practice bills just as any other doctor’s office would, and currently accepts Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, Health Net, MagnaCare, Medicare and Tricare, Goldberg said. Next month it expects to accept Aetna, Cigna, GHI, Oxford and UnitedHealthcare.
