HWLL-What are they teaching our kids?

I have been a coach in the Hewlett-Woodmere Little League for many years and never have I been more disappointed with the direction of the club than I am right now. I have been begging the league to do something with the coaches that have the win at all costs mentality that is not only dangerous but is killing the spirit of the young boys and girls that are playing. I've seen coaches of 6 year old kids have the batter run non stop around the bases and score because the other team could not field or throw the ball. Infield home runs I call them. At 4th grade, the kids get to pitch. Some of them are still trying to find the plate. For some reason, "stealing" is allowed as they try to learn how to pitch. I don't get this. In fact, it's not really stealing since only my boys will try a straight steal AFTER THE CATCHER HAS THE BALL. Everyone else just advances on passed balls. There should be no advancing on a passed ball until the kids can throw strikes consistently. Games should not be won or lost b/c your pitcher can't throw strikes or you don't have Johnny Bench behind the plate to stop the passed ball. I know of one coach that left after the fall season and another that will be leaving after the spring. It is disheartening to try to teach the kids not to take shortcuts, to play fair and to learn the game the right way when the other coach is only concerned about covering the point spread it seems. If the HWLL is more concerned about the quantity of teams/games that they can put out each season as opposed to the quality of the players and their enjoyment and development, then I think they should have their charter revoked. This is not a travel league. Yes, baseball is a contact sport but the catchers aren't getting paid to get leveled at home plate when the runner at third tries to score on a passed ball. These kids are just learning how to pitch. They shouldn't have to worry about the runner as well. I just think the entire board needs to rethink the mission statement of the league before they lose any more coaches and players. My son and myself included. (and the 20 or so parents that would be leaving with us. I counted.)
