SELF DEFENSE - The Five Ways of winning!

Every 22 seconds someone is the victim of a violent assault. That's an unfortunate and scary statistic.

Face Reality
The “it-will-never-happen-to-me” mindset would be great, if only it were true. “Every victim of an assault or crime never woke up that day expecting they were going to become a victim. Too many like to pretend it will never happen to them. At our core, we don’t really believe it can happen to us.

That’s a false sense of security which is fueled by a society and media that propagates fear rather than empowerment. When we are in fear, we choose not to deal with it, we deny it.

Understanding the potential for violence is real, is the first step toward arming yourself to fight it, survive it and be victorious.

Self Defense is first and foremost NOT just learning strikes, blocks and escapes. Self Defense more importantly is about making safer choices first. We categorize it this way:

#1 Win by avoiding - Be aware and avoid potential trouble by making safer choices.

#2 Win nonphysically - Outsmart the potential threat using strategey, trickery.

#3 Win Physically without harm - Control the attacker.

#4 Win Physically by Injuring - Strike only if you have to.

#5 Win by learning from the experience. Learn to turn a negative into a positve.

Win nonphysically

I was working in the airport many years ago as a security officer subcontracting for Eastern Airlines. I was about 18 and this big goon of a baggage handler heard I took martial arts and wanted to 'Spar' me. The guy was three time my size and resembled a Silverback Mountain Gorilla. I tried to diplomatically decline but he continued to persist. So I said 'If we get caught we'll get in trouble. So lets go down the jet way" I punched in my security code opened the door and politely said "after you". He went through and I locked the door behind him. Confused he looked through the little window in the door and I bowed and said 'Lesson 1'.

Another time I was living in Queens and walking my dog at 1AM. As we were following our normal route. I spied three young men trying to break into a car. They were about 100 feet away and they spotted me as well but waited to see what I would do. At that time I left my cell phone in my home so thinking quickly I pulled out my black wallet and pretended it was a phone, faked hitting some numbers and began talking into my wallet. The robbers thinking I was calling the police panicked and left. Only to go two blocks right in front of my home and try again. At that point I simply went upstairs, called the police and they were arrested.

The point here is often you can resolve a potential situation by simply using your head and outsmarting the bully. But it's hard to think clearly if you are in a panicked survival mode. That's why Martial Arts training is such a wonderful practice. It gives you the confidence to not fight but use your head instead!
