Blizzard Coming to Five Towns Area

Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel; roads worsening.

A rush-hour nightmare loomed as a major winter storm slickened Long Island's roadways Friday.

No power outages reported in the Five Towns, though that is likely to change as the evening goes on.

Customers can report power outages to National Grid through the Long Island Power Authority’s (LIPA) hotline: 1-800-490-0075 or at 631-755-6900 or by visiting their Storm Central website at www.lipower.org/stormcenter from a computer or mobile device. To report via text messaging, text OUT to myLIPA (695472) - pre-registration is required.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in response to the blizzard, which could leave more than a foot of snow across Long Island by Saturday morning.

According to the American Red Cross Long Island, a shelter has been opened at Westbury High School, 1 Post Ave. in Old Westbury.
