Citing Parking Issues, Hewlett-Woodmere Library May Cut Programs

Current lot cannot support rising attendance, trustees say.

The cutting of programs could be in store at Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library because rising attendance is worsening issues associated with inadequate parking.

"It's a growing problem," Director Susan de Scoria said at Monday's meeting of the board of trustees. "We have more cars than spaces. We're going to look at programs and possibly cut some out due to parking problems."

The library recently found its parking situation quickly deteriorating. Forced to leave their vehicles in restricted areas, some patrons have caused major traffic flow problems in the area, the trustees said.

"Nassau County is an aged suburb and the library has become a cultural center that offers affordable community programs during a bad economy," de Scoria said.

De Scoria described an incident that occurred just last week. "Someone pulled into the blue stripes and turned off their car," she said. "Another vehicle almost hit that one and as a result the driver came in and complained. The two drivers met at the circulation desk which resulted in a problem."

When the library looks to make cuts, some of its movie program may be the first to go. The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library currently presents films at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., but the trustees are considering the elimination of the earlier showing altogether in order to lessen the midday surge of cars on library property. Sundays and midday during the week are the busiest times for the facility.

While municipal parking meters, a private security guard, new signage, acquiring nearby property and adding a multi-level parking garage have all been mentioned as possible solutions, resolution does not seem imminent.

As board member David Adler put it, "Parking isn't the problem – it's getting in and out."

Also under discussion:

  • Continuation of engaging chamber groups and other musical entertainment following the latest success of the library's children and family concert events.
  • Problems with the light pole upgrade, currently underway on library property.
  • A recent sewage emergency which prompted assessment of the library's pumping system.
  • An increase in book selections and attendance at both children and adult programs.
