Fire District Elections Results Are In

Charles Borfitz takes Inwood seat, while unopposed candidates slide into office.

Charles Borfitz defeated Anthony Rivelli in the race to fill an open commissioner seat in the Inwood Fire District, according to results that were tabulated Tuesday night.

Borfitz received 246 votes to Rivelli's 139, according to the district. He will take office on Jan. 1.

"I was impressed with the number of people that came out to support me," he said. "I'm going to get up there and continue on with what Commissioner [James] Pearsall had done in the past and keep giving good fire protection." He added that the seat had "sentimental" value because his late father once occupied it.

Inwood Fire District voters also approved a ballot initiative to establish a new capital reserve fund for an undetermined amount of money to finance information technology and communication systems at the firehouse.

  • In Hewlett, Paul Breslin received 34 votes in his unopposed race to stay in his seat for a three-year term. Mark Lorberbaum received 39 votes in an uncontested race to take over the seat being vacated by Nick Martino.
  • Erik Kinney received 47 votes to win his bid for a second term as a commissioner for the Woodmere Fire District. Write-in candidate Phil Stein received 31 votes.
  • Andrew Schmitt, Sr., won his bid to replace his son as a Meadowmere fire commissioner. The number of votes was not available. Voters also passed a ballot initiative that will allow retirees to accrue service rewards after their retirement age.
