Free Replacement of Curbside Trees Felled by Sandy

Free tree replacement program for homeowners whose curbside trees were felled by Hurricane Sandy.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilwoman Angie Cullin are pleased to announce a free tree replacement program for homeowners whose curbside trees were felled by Hurricane Sandy.

In the weeks following Superstorm Sandy, Hempstead Town removed more than 1,800 tree stumps from town right-of-ways (the grass strip between sidewalk and curb). Homeowners in unincorporated areas of the town who lost curbside trees during the storm, are now eligible for a free replacement tree from Hempstead Town while supplies last.

Generally, when a homeowner wants a new tree on the grass median in front of their home, there is a $150 fee associated with that planting. Hempstead Town has waived that fee for those who have lost trees as a result of Sandy. Homeowners will be able to choose between seven different species of trees. The replacement trees will be planted in the fall of 2013. Past experience has shown that the tree’s viability is increased when they are planted in autumn.
