Weekend Events: Holiday Sale, The Nutcracker

An in-depth look at some upcoming weekend events.

As the weather cools down, there are plenty of events around town to help prepare you for the holiday season. Whether you’re looking to do a little shopping or take in a show, you won’t want to miss these opportunities to get into the spirit of the season.

If you want to avoid the malls, consider getting your shopping done at the Long Beach Historical & Presevation Society’s from Friday through Sunday on West Penn Street. Throughout the weekend, local artists will showcase their work, which includes photography, paintings, hand-woven scarves and blankets, ornaments and baked goods.

“We have many creative and talented people right here in our community, so you do not need to travel to buy a unique gift.” said Elizabeth Connolly, who organized the event. “Shopping locally helps to support these artists, saves gas and keeps the money you spend in the community.”

For the first time this year, the sale will feature hand-painted silk scarves, felt toys, and jewelry made from paper beads. Those who attend can also browse the Historical Society’s exhibits and listen to live musical performances.

When you’re ready to sit back and take a break from shopping, head over to South Side High School for a performance of on Friday at 7:30 p.m, Saturday at 5 p.m., or Sunday at 4 p.m.

Presented by the RVC Guild for the Arts and Leggz Ltd. Dance, the show will feature dancers from the American Ballet Theatre, the Kirov Ballet and the Atlanta Ballet. The South Shore Symphony Orchestra will provide the music, and this year’s performance will debut brand new scenery and costumes.

“Our Nutcracker brings the community together for a wonderful holiday tradition,” said Sam Carrell, the show’s assistant director. “It is just as enjoyable as taking your family to Lincoln Center, but at a fraction of the cost.”

Residents may recognize a few familiar faces in the cast — RVC Mayor Fran Murray, RVC Deputy Mayor Nancy Howard and RVC Trustee Michael Sepe will play the roles of the show’s grandparents and uncle. Call 516-766-7171 for tickets.
