Get Out - Your Local Guide to the Weekend, Aug. 6-7

Fairs, fishing and free concerts - it's all happening close to home this weekend.

Can you believe it's August already?

To help you take advantage of the beautiful days of summer we still have left, we've scoured the neighborhood to find several great outdoor events taking place this weekend.

There’s free concerts, a classic car show, fishing and festivals we know you'll enjoy.

Classic Car Show

Where:135 Woodfield Rd., West Hempstead
When: Saturday, Aug. 6, from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m.
Why go: See classic cars, listen to live music and savor refreshments - all free of charge - at this year's "Hot August Nights Car Show." The event is hosted by Woodfield Medical Services. Winners of the People's Choice Award receive $250 free gas.
Cost: free

Family Fishing

Where: Eagle Ave or Exit 18 off the Southern State Parkway, West Hempstead
When: Saturday, August 6, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Why go: Family Freshwater Fishing Clinic sponsored by the NYSDEC. Learn about our local aquatic environment and participate in open fishing. There will be education stations and professionals on hand to answer questions too.
Cost: $8 for parking.

Malverne Alums Play On

Where: Gazebo at in Malverne
When: Saturday, August 6, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Why go: Enjoy a beautiful day in the park and be entertained by the Malverne Alumni Band. This annual event is a crowd pleaser, just don’t forget your chairs or blankets.

Cost: free

Puppet Show

Where: , Eagle Ave or Exit 18 off the Southern State Parkway, West Hempstead
When: Sunday, August 7,  2 p.m.
Why go: Grab a chair or blanket and come down to enjoy Punch’s Magic Lamp. This interactive show, including Fred Greenspan’s puppets, is part of the Children's Summer Theater program.

Cost: $8 parking fee

Pool Concert

Where: , Roosevelt Blvd & Nassau Blvd. in West Hempstead
When: Sunday, August 7, 6:30 p.m.
Why go: A free concert by The Usual Suspects. This band is a hit around Long Island and this concert promises to be a good time.

Cost: free   

Music in the Park

Where: Gazebo at in Malverne
When: Sunday, August, 7, 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Why go: The Nassau Pops performs an afternoon concert in the park. This full orchestra will appeal to a broad audience and is sure to entertain.

Cost: free

B-52's Perform

Where: Lakeside Theater at Eisenhower Park, parking field 6 & 6A, East Meadow
When: Saturday, August 6, 7:30 p.m.
Why go: A fun-filled, get on your feet concert by the B-52’s.  This iconic band will play all their hits and will have everyone up and dancing.

Cost: free

Music and Art Festival

Where: Kennedy Plaza in Long Beach,
When: Sunday, August 7, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Why go: The Barrier Beach “Memphis” Blues and Arts Festival will be joining forces with the weekly Arts in the Plaza project to bring “Family-Friendly” music and arts workshops, live blues music, fine art, craft and photography vendors. Musicians (all ages and levels) are encouraged to bring their instruments to participate in a workshop from 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Children are asked to take an active part in hands-on arts, crafts and music activities from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Live music will also be performed in the Plaza.

Fun Fair

Where: Church of Blessed Sacrament, 201 N. Central Ave. in Valley Stream
When: Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7, from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Why go: There are rides, games, food, entertainment and all the traditional festival activities at this first annual family fair.

Lakeview Day Parade

Where: Parade begins at, 432 Chatauqua Ave. in West HempsteadWhen: Saturday, Aug. 6, 8:00 am.
Why go: Several residents and community groups will be participating in this parade to celebrate the hamlet of Lakeview.
Cost: free

Family Yoga

Where: Revolution Yoga, 7 N Village Ave, Rockville Centre
When: Sunday, Aug. 7, 11 a.m. - noon
Why go: Adults aren't the only ones who can benefit from the calming effects of yoga. Yoga provides kids with a much-needed physical outlet in a noncompetitive environment. This is great and healthy way to spend time with family. The classes encourage kids to open their minds, be comfortable in their bodies and learn methods to combat stress in school or social situations.
Cost: $20

Restaurant Night

Where: , 948 Broadway, Woodmere
When: Sunday, Aug. 7, from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Why go: Come out to Backstage Nite Club every Sunday night for half price pitchers, $5 personal pizzas and $10 for unlimited bowling.
