Local 9/11 Memorials and Events

Honor those who were lost a decade ago.

Sept. 11 was a day that we all will never forget. Everyone remembers where they were, what they were doing and how that day forever changed life as we knew it.

With the 10th anniversary this Sunday, numerous places around Long Island are having special ceremonies and events.

Patch has put together a list of some of the local places having a special ceremony, memorial service or event this weekend.

Long Beach: 

Freedom Flight 9/11, Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011

Freedom Flight 9/11 will take place on the shoreline at Neptune Boulevard beach in Long Beach to honor the victims and responders of the Sept. 11 attacks.

This magnificent kite flying exhibit has been held in Long Beach for nine years, with professional kite flyers and amateur kite enthusiasts floating their kites above the beach as symbols of the universal dream of freedom and the resilience of the human spirit.

Free kites will be distributed to children and flown alongside those flown by professional kite flyers who will show off whimsical kites of every shape and size.

A sand sculpture will be built on the sand near the boardwalk and children will place American flags at a memorial there during a 9/11 tribute.

9/11 Memorial Mass & Paddle Out, Sunday Sept. 11, 2011

At 9 a.m., the Long Beach Fire Department will hold a Memorial at Lafayette Boulevard and West Park Avenue; at 10 a.m. an Ecumenical Service and Catholic Mass will be held on National Boulevard Beach (all are welcome); following the service, the world’s largest Memorial Paddle Out will occur.

Military and first responders memorial service and paddle out ceremony: Allegria Hotel on National Boulevard, Long Beach, 516-662-0485. Interfaith service and Catholic Mass held in front of Allegria Hotel; memorial paddle out ceremony follows. Events are part of the O'Keefe Foundation Annual 9/11 Memorial Program.

Sunrise Memorial Service, Sunday Sept. 11, 2011

At 7:30 a.m. at Town Park in Point Lookout. Hempstead Town will hold an ecumenical service of remembrance alongside the waters of the Atlantic on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11.

Lynbrook:

End of Summer Block Party and Salute to Our Heroes Fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011

The Lynbrook Fire Department is hosting a fundraiser for Wounded Warriors from 5-11 p.m., at Rescue, Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company 1's firehouse.

All proceeds benefit the Nassau County Firefighters-Operation Wounded Warrior, which helps to raise money and collect supplies for U.S. military personnel injured in the line of duty. At the end of the year, Lynbrook firefighters will join others from Nassau County on the "Long Red Line" to provide holiday gifts to injured servicemen and servicewomen.

Oceanside:

Come meet and greet the real heroes, Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011

Register now to join Freestyle Martial Arts Academy, South Shore Sports Complex and the Feal Good Foundation in rememberance of the events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001 and those whose lives were forever affected.

Admittance is free. The event will take place from 8:46 a.m. until 5:20 p.m. Proceeds go to support the Feal Good Foundation.

Suggested $10 donation includes: Food, games, facility use, giveaways, raffles, apparel and merchandise available for sale. Call 516-668-5606 for more information.

Cedarhurst:

Memorial program, Sunday Sept. 11, 2011

The program will feature music by the Lawrence Philharmonic Orchestra and remarks from Cedarhurst Mayor Andrew J. Parise at At 4 p.m., at Andrew J. Parise Cedarhurst Park.

Malverne:

Candlelight vigil, Sunday Sept. 11, 2011

At 8 p.m., Gazebo, Church Street and Ocean Avenue.

Rockville Centre:

9/11 ceremony, Sunday Sept. 11, 2011

At 12 p.m., Rockville Centre, Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road.

East Rockaway:

Memorial ceremony, Sunday Sept. 11, 2011

At 7 p.m., Gate Way to American Heroes Memorial Park, 376 Atlantic Ave. The ceremony, behind village hall, will include two pieces of steel from the World Trade Center site.
