Honor Local Fire Departments on the Green

Spots are still available for the 40th annual Marty Mongoni Golf Outing on July 22, where the Five Towns Kiwanis will honor the area’s local fire departments.

The group also plans to give the Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Meadowmere Park and Woodmere fire departments $1,000 each.

“Of course, Sandy was a factor in choosing to honor the five departments, but they do an outstanding job every day of the year,” said Tom Cohen, one of the organizers of the event. “Kiwanis Club of the Five Towns has traditionally provided direct funding for children and seniors in our community, so the prospect of supporting the local fire departments, who literally take care of all of us, seemed like a natural fit for this year’s outing.”

He added that the departments could always use the additional funds, but pointed out Meadowmere firehouse, which suffered damage from Superstorm Sandy.

The Marty Mongoni Golf Outing is named in honor of the founder of the outing. It has previously honored Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony Santino, Nick "KO" Fabrizzo, former Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey and, most recently, the Hewlett House.

The full-day event at The Woodmere Club (see flyer above) features hours of golf, brunch and dinner. There will be a “Beat the Pro” challenge, a putting contest and raffles.

The Inwood, Woodmere and Seawane clubs have provided foursomes (a type of match) of golf with lunch as raffle and auction prizes. The Lawrence Yacht and Country Club has donated four rounds of golf.

“We really love the men and women of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department,” said Leo McMahon, general manager of the Lawrence club.

Jack Irushalmi, president of the Seawane Club, responded immediately to a request of a foursome donation, saying that "the nearly 70-year charitable tradition of the Kiwanis Club of the Five Towns combined with the wonderful firefighters of the Hewlett Fire Department were certainly deserving of a contribution."
