Franklin Avenue Railroad Crossing to Close Again

MTA to do two more days of work on tracks.

The MTA is in the process of upgrading the tracks at the Franklin Avenue Long Island Railroad crossing in Hewlett, which will close the intersection for another two days next week.

“The crossing at Franklin Avenue in Hewlett is being upgraded from a rubber-based crossing to a sturdier concrete-based crossing,” C. Ellis, LIRR’s engineer of track-projects, told Patch. “As of Wednesday [May 23], we completed the crossing renewal on [the south] track, as part of our efforts to maintain a state of good repair of our infrastructure. We plan to renew [the north] track beginning Wednesday, May 30.”

The work will require Franklin Avenue to be closed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to the MTA. The authority recommends residents use the West Broadway and Broadway intersection as a detour.

“Upon completion of the crossing panel installation, temporary paving material will be placed between the Long Island Railroad crossing panels and the saw cut line of the roadway,” Glenn Greenberg, LIRR’s assistant chief engineer maintenance of way, wrote in a letter to Nassau County Commissioner of Public Works Shila Shah-Gaunoudias. “While the work is in progress, the Long Island Railroad and the MTA police will provide the necessary flagmen, detour signs, and crossing protection.”

The MTA will, in the future, permanently repave the approaches to the crossing when weather permits. This work will only close one lane of traffic, however.
