A Bit of a Lull

I didn’t post last week because I didn’t really have enough to write about so this installment will cover two weeks.  I guess this is just the lull before the school year kicks in and we go back full force!!!  (I was going to say it is the lull before the storm but we don't want to live through that again...ahem.)

I did get to go into the Community Garden during week one and we harvested tomatoes, summer squash, red lettuce, peppers…1 kohlrabi we missed the week before.  I can’t see how…the thing looks like an alien and is very noticeable!!  The kids planted potatoes.  We then learned a little about tomato grafting from the gentleman from the Cornell Cooperative.  We were given an assignment to learn about grafting tomatoes and so I went home and watched a video at the Johnny Seeds website.  The plan was to do some grafting of our own this week but I missed it and I also missed both garden calls!  Sometimes personal life must take precedence…we were taking my daughter to college!

These two weeks were also quiet in terms of our weekly reading packets.  Once again, I took the opportunity to catch up on some other Board related reading.  I had several issues of the New York State School Board newspaper that I had let stack up…I am now on top of it!

Last Tuesday night we had a special meeting to appoint a new employee and then we went into an executive session to discuss some matters of particular personnel.  It was definitely one of our shorter meetings!

Wednesday morning I attended the district staff’s welcome back at the High School.  At 8 AM I was under bright hot lights on the stage.  There are times when we sit in the “audience” and times that we are on the stage…guess which one I prefer…just sayin’! Anyway, from that vantage point I was able to see everyone and it was great to see the whole staff in one room getting ready to start the school year!  I only stayed for the general assembly for about an hour and then left when the departments broke up into their groups for their day of Professional Development. I wouldn’t have minded staying for some of that but we need to give our professionals time to do their own work!

I wrote Governor Cuomo an email last Friday because I noticed that on his education website there is a new listing for a symposium up in Buffalo in two weeks.  It doesn’t say what it is about.  I had been checking the website because the 3rd installment of his symposiums (I had told you about the one I gone to in July) was supposed to be in August somewhere on the Island and I wanted to make sure I hadn’t missed it…that one is still listed as TBA.  I hope to receive a timely response.  In the meantime, I was glad my email went through because at some point I think I was being blocked from sending him emails!!!  Yes folks, I am a squeaky wheel.

I am now going to relax and enjoy the last of summer.  Next week I will start to have to figure out what gets into my blog and what doesn’t…sometimes I am just doing my Mommy thing…but I guess in the end…I am still always MamaGates for all the kids!
