Rock and Wrap It Up! (RWU) and the National Football League (NFL) have partnered to recover all food that is prepared but not served at all NFL-sanctioned events leading up to and including Super Bowl XLVIII. RWU has developed a mobile app, The RWU Whole Earth Calculator, which recorded all the foods recovered and converted them into total meals and greenhouse gas emission reduction numbers. The statistics can be sent to social media sites directly from the mobile app. The NFL and RWU announced today that 24,220 meals were served from food recovered from the Super Bowl and related NFL-sanctioned events. Over 5 days, 31,487 pounds of food were recovered by 6 anti-poverty/hunger agencies in New Jersey and New York. 25,190 pounds of Carbon Dioxide and 22,671 pounds of Methane were stopped from being released by not allowing the food to decay in land fill. All food donors are protected by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Law. RWU vets all of its anti-poverty agencies who recover the excess food. They must have health certificates, storage, on-going programs, refrigeration, transportation and the ability to record the food that is recovered. The RWU Whole Earth Calculator will help reduce time and increase accuracy of food recovery reporting. RWU currently works with 75 sports teams, coordinating the food recovery.

The RWU Whole Earth Calculator mobile app is a collaboration between RWU, Meeting U. and EventMobi, the application developer. The app will enable the user to enter poundage and receive converted data. The application will also launch a tweet and posting to local digital media, automatically. The calculator uses USDA and EPA conversion formulas for total meals and GHG poundage.

About Rock and Wrap It Up!

Now entering it’s 24th year, Rock and Wrap it Up! (RWU) is an award-winning anti-poverty think tank. We research, discover and nurture potential donors who have renewable assets to share. Recognized by the White House with a Point Of Light Award and receiving numerous EPA distinctions, we strive to re-earn these honors every day.

Asset donors include touring bands, educational institutions, the hospitality industry, professional sports teams, hospitals and TV/film productions throughout North America. We find and vet agencies who need these resources thereby reducing the poverty footprint while reducing the carbon footprint. All of our partners are protected by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act (Pub. L. No 104-210, 110 Stat. 3011(1996) as long as safe food handling is used. Over one billion meals have been recovered since 1991.

RWU wrote and helped pass the Federal Food Donation Act of 2008 (Pul. L. 110-247 122 Stat. 2314(2008) The Act encourages federal buildings to donate food from their restaurants, cafeterias and from outside rentals to feed our nation’s hungry. We launched Hungerpedia.com in late July 2011. The Hungerpedia web destination is a North American compilation of anti-poverty/hunger agencies vetted by RWU to receive and recover asset donations.

About the NFL Environmental Program

Since 1993, the National Football League has developed programs to address the environmental impact of Super Bowl events and activities to mitigate the environmental impact and leave a permanent legacy in the Super Bowl host community. In addition to Prepared Food Recovery, the Environmental Program is responsible for recycling cardboard and other materials from Super Bowl events and donates everything from decorative banners to office supplies and building materials to local non-profit agencies for reuse or remanufacture. In partnership with NFL sponsor Verizon, more than 27,000 trees have been planted throughout New York and New Jersey to help “green” the community and to repair some of the damage done by Hurricane Sandy and hundreds of cell phones have been collected to be donated to domestic violence shelters as emergency phones. As part of an arrangement between the NFL and PSEG in New Jersey, MetLife Stadium, the site of Super Bowl XLVIII, and all other major NFL Super Bowl event venues will be powered using “green energy” to reduce the climate impact of Super Bowl events.Tens of thousands of books, pieces of sports equipment and school supplies have already been collected and distributed to children in need through the Super Kids – Super Sharing projects in New York and New Jersey.
