Bail Set at $50K for Teen Who Allegedly Posted School Threat

A judge set bail at $50,000 for a 16-year-old Woodmere boy who allegedly threatened to blow up the office of his school’s assistant principal.

Joel Levy is charged with making a terrorist threat and second-degree aggravated harassment for his threatening posts on Facebook against his school, Mesivta Ateres Yaakov in Lawrence. Police said Levy posted the threat while at school.

The threat led to the evacuation of the school and surrounding streets Tuesday morning for about two hours while police searched the building.

The court also issued a stay-away order of protection barring Levy from contact with the assistant principal.

Levy’s defence attorney, Stanley Kopilow, said that his client didn’t intend to carry out his threat, according to Newsday. The paper reported:

“He's a good 16-year-old. Like many 16-year-olds, he doesn't understand the fact that you can't necessarily say everything that may be on your mind," Kopilow said. "But this is not a dangerous kid."
