Teen Charged in Rape, Attack in Valley Stream

Police arrested a 16-year-old on Sunday for allegedly attempting to sexually abuse a woman on Mill Road in Valley Stream. 

Nashane Peterkin, 16, of Springfield Gardens, was charged with first-degree attempted sexual abuse by Nassau Police, as well as first-degree rape and second-degree assault. He was also charged with strangulation by New York State Park Police in a separate incident. 

DWI Motorist Sentenced to 8 Years for Hitting Girl

A Long Beach man was sentenced to eight years in prison after he drove drunk, hit a 15-year-old girl crossing the street, and dragged her for 600 feet last year, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced Friday.

German Gutierrez, 50, pleaded guilty in May to the top charges of first-degree assault with depraved Indifference, aggravated driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury. He was sentenced Friday by Judge Tammy Robbins.

Tree Collapses on Block Party 

A large tree collapsed late Saturday night in New Hyde Park, ruining a large block party on Maple Drive and sending several party-goers to the hospital.

The approximately 30-ft. limb came down about 10:39 p.m. in front of 28 Maple Drive with many residents calling 911 immediately afterwards. According to eyewitness reports, the limb landed on a man and a woman on the front lawn. Many residents were in front of the house playing a beanbag tournament when they heard crackling sounds.

Cops Nab Bike Bandit

After a brief chase on Cambridge Avenue, a 43-year-old Franklin Square man was apprehended by police after an Adelphi University Public Safety Officer observed him steal a bicycle on campus, according to Garden City police.

Raymond Henry was in possession of bolt cutters and was charged with possession of burglar tools at the time of his arrest on Aug. 30, according to a Garden City police report.
