Crimes Nearby: Alleged Pedophile Arrested, T-Mobile Store Robbed

A rundown of arrests and incidents that occurred in the past week in areas surrounding the Five Towns.

The following information was supplied by the Nassau County and Rockville Centre police departments and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

Three men made away with more than $30,000 worth of communications equipment and additional cash after robbing the T-Mobile in Lynbrook Friday afternoon.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 3 p.m., three black male suspects entered the T-Mobile store located at 675 Sunrise Highway and announced a robbery. One of the suspects also took out a handgun.

The suspects stole an unknown amount of cash and more than $30,000 worth of communications equipment, police said.

According to police, there was one employee present at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

The suspects were described to be wearing dark-colored hooded sweatshirts.

Teen Choked Man at High School, Police Say

A Valley Stream teen was arrested on Friday after he allegedly knocked down and choked a 50-year-old man who asked him to turn off the music playing on his phone, according to police.

At 8:45 a.m., Umair Hameed, 17, was in the hallway of Elmont Memorial High School playing music out loud on his cell phone, police said. The male victim instructed Hameed to turn off the music, but he refused.

After the victim took the phone from Hameed’s hand, the teen allegedly knock him to the floor and choked him. Hameed then released the victim from the alleged chokehold and continued to his class.

The police were called and Hameed was placed under arrest without incident. The victim refused medical attention at the scene.

Hameed is charged with second-degree assault and strangulation.

A 59-year-old Valley Stream man was arrested on charges that he arranged to meet a 6-year-old child in order to take pornographic photos of her, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. 

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli announced the arrest last Monday following an investigation in which Allan Davis, of Valley Stream, used the internet to make arrangements with a person he believed to be the mother of a 6-year-old female to take nude photographs of the child.

Davis, who was arrested without incident on March 23, was charged with attempt to endanger the welfare of a child and attempt to manufacture child pornography.

Davis is a registered sex offender in his home state of New York for a 1999 arrest in which he traveled from Maryland to Florida for the purpose of having sexual relations with an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old female, according to the prosecutor's office. Davis was also charged with possession of child pornography at that time. 

A West Hempstead man was arrested last Monday after allegedly being found in possession of marijuana while driving on the Southern State Parkway.

According to New York State Police, around 3:25 p.m., a trooper stopped a Gray Toyota Corolla for moving out of its lane several times while the operator was using a cell phone traveling eastbound on the Southern State Parkway west of Fletcher Avenue.

While interviewing the vehicle's operator, Jeremy Levine, 23, the trooper detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle, police said. A search of the vehicle yielded four grams of marijuana in a zip lock bag, marijuana paraphernalia and three hydrocodone pills.

A Rockville Centre man was arrested last Monday for allegedly driving with 30 driver's license suspensions.

According to New York State Police, around 10:15 a.m., troopers stopped a black Mitsubishi Galant for not having brake lights eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike west of the Meadowbrook State Parkway in Hempstead.

A license check of the vehicle's operator, James Merriweather, 55, revealed that he had 30 license suspensions, police said.

Police Search for Shoplifting Suspects

Crime Stoppers and the Nassau County Police Department are seeking the public’s help in finding women wanted in connection with shoplifting multiple items at Green Acres Mall in February.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, at about 11:10 a.m., the unknown female subjects (see attached) were observed inside Bath and Body Works at 2034 Green Acres Mall. The subjects stole assorted merchandise from the store and passed all point of purchase without making payment. The subjects fled the scene in an unknown direction.
