A rundown of arrests and incidents that occurred in the past week.

Bicyclist Seriously Injured After Hit and Run

The driver of a dark-colored small vehicle on Sunday struck a 37-year-old man who was riding his bicycle on Brookside Drive in Valley Stream and fled the scene, police said.

At 3:38 a.m., the Hispanic man was riding his bike when he was hit by the westbound car in the vicinity of Rockaway Avenue, according to police. The motorist then fled south on Rockaway Avenue without stopping.

The victim suffered critical injuries and was transported by a Nassau County Police Department Ambulance to a nearby local hospital.

Detectives ask that anyone with information about this crime or any below should contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain anonymous.

Nearly two years after  and assaulting two cops in a bid to elude arrest, a Freeport man was convicted of his crimes and could face up to 25 years in prison, officials said Friday.

It took a jury about three hours to convict Jerry Valery, 41, of Freeport, of two counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree assault, second and third degree attempted robbery and resisting arrest.

According to Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 22, 2010, Valery entered an Allen Road home by pushing in a dining room window air conditioner and stole assorted jewelry and electronics, including a camera and a laptop computer. Valery tripped the home’s burglary alarm when he entered, and two Rockville Centre police officers quickly arrived at the scene.

Valery was confronted by the officers inside the rear of the home, and violently resisted arrest. Valery repeatedly threw punches at the officers and grabbed one of their firearm holsters before being tased and placed under arrest. Both officers were treated for minor injuries.

Long Beach Police are investigating an alleged rape at the  during Memorial Day weekend.

A registered female guest at the beach-side hotel, at 80 W. Broadway, notified security at 4 a.m. last Friday that she was given a date rape drug and raped in a hotel room, according to CBS News.

The hotel turned over surveillance video, which according to one law enforcement source, showed eight men going in and out of the room in question.

“The detectives executed a search warrant at the scene and we’ve conducted extensive interviews with patrons and staff that were there that night,” Sgt. Eric Cregeen, ’s public information officer, told Patch on Thursday. “And the Allegria Hotel has been extremely cooperative with our investigation to date.”

Man Fires Gun at Valley Stream Home

A black male subject armed with a handgun on Tuesday, May 29, chased another man through a rear yard in Valley Stream, then pointed the gun at the homeowner and fired, hitting the house, according to police.

At 11:33 p.m., the 36-year-old male victim saw the suspect — described as 20 to 25 years old with a small build and wearing a white t-shirt and green pants — running after another man, who had an unknown article of clothing covering his face, in the back of his Montgomery Street residence, police said

The victim then noticed the subject point the gun at him and firing one round that hit the house. The homeowner then saw a third man, only described as black, standing in the driveway.

All three of the men fled on foot in an unknown direction. Police did not recover any shell casings. No injuries were reported. The investigation is continuing.

Lynbrook Police are searching for the suspect of a petit larceny that occurred two weeks ago at the Rite Aid located at 400 Sunrise Highway.

According to police, on May 23, the manager of the Rite Aid reported seeing a male suspect walking around the store with a black plastic bag under his arm around 10:30 a.m. The suspect was then observed at 11 a.m. attempting to leave the store with the bag filled with merchandise.

The manager attempted to stop the suspect and asked to see what was in the bag when the suspect pushed the manager out of their way and ran from the store, police said. The total amount of property taken was $179.95 dollars.

The suspect is described as a black man in his mid 20s, 6-feet tall, thin build, dark complexion with an unknown type of tattoo on his neck. He was wearing a yellow t-shirt, dark jeans, dark-hooded sweatshirt and a dark-colored baseball cap.

All above by the original writer notwithstanding it is morally reprehensible that people who did ,Read More do not, would not send their children to public school but rather private school, religious or secular, sit on a public school board of education. They are there for one reason only ;to keep taxes as low as possible because those that elect them carry private school tuition. That is NOT an acceptable reason to direct/control/guide the education of public school students. Any position put forward that disputes this as the basis for parents of private school students being on a BOE is a lie.

It's not just the teachers... As a parent of 2 going on 3 school aged children, I'm amazed at howRead More much our free public schools cost. We get a supply list every year of things like crayons and pencils which I get, although I don't see why it HAS to be crayola. The red crayon in the box from the 99 cents store is just as red as the one in the $4 box from someplace else. Also, I don't understand why I need to send in 4 boxes of tissues, paper towels, wipes, etc per child. When I was a kid, I remember keeping a little pack of kleenex in my desk for when I needed it. I'm sure the district can buy in bulk at half the cost to us and store it in the schools until needed. Also, as far as the teachers go, I'm not sure if they do it on LI, but when I was a SBM in the NYC DOE, we had what was called Teacher's Choice which was a check for $250 that every teacher would get on March 15 (?) to help pay for the classroom supplies they bought throughout the year. It always amazed me how many of the "supplies" were purchased on 03/14. I had the pleasure of denying some of the more bogus expenses. Also, anything they would spend above and beyond their reimbursement is now tax deductible I believe. My wife, sister, cousin and many friends were and some still are classroom teachers. I know firsthand how the good ones give much more than they get in their check(s). The trick is to weed out the ones that are only in it for the money, benefits and summers off and not the kids.

lilly, i just created a group on Facebook (Hewlett-Woodmere District 14 Budget Discussion) forRead More residents of district 14 to share and question. Maybe someone on the board will look at it. Please tell your friends. A copy of the budget is uploaded and can be reviewed. I believe residents should make informed decisions. Read it and see what jumps out at you and looks good, fishy, or just normal.

thanks Shirley- we have to keep posting to vote NO for the budget- I try to go to meetings and it isRead More ridiculous to hear how no one comes to the table with ideas of how NOT to SPEND our money! If there were only more people that would attend and stand up and speak up maybe it would change.

I do not understand how we never have a year with NO TAX INCREASES!!!!! It is pretty sad- we have toRead More get new resources, get more project bids and simply learn to say no or tighten up and not spend and what about salary freezes! We are all living with these types of challenges. We are living through difficult times. When I look around the town and see so many homes and stores for rent and sale- it should be a lightbulb moment. We can't continue to live this way. People will keep leaving the neighborhood and that's really not good for any of us!

It is possible to find a rental, though it might not be easy. Many rentals are in co-op buildings.Read More They are typically not flexible and it is unlikely that you will be able to get into one of those. Your best bet would be in a multi-family house, There you are dealing with a homeowner, rather than a co-op board and a management company, who might be willing to listen to your plight. If you find a sympathetic homeowner you will be OK. It might take patience, but you should find someplace.
