Crimes Nearby: Apparent Murder-Suicide, Teen Arrested for Robberies

A husband and wife were found dead in their Oceanside home Monday evening in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police have identified the deceased as Christine Braun Johnson, 63, and James Johnson, 73, both of 2856 Nicole Court in Oceanside. Both victims suffered apparent gunshot wounds.

According to Nassau County Homicide Squad detectives, Fourth Precinct officers responded to a Nicole Court residence just after 6 p.m. Monday to conduct a wellness check on the homeowners.

Insp. Kenneth Lack of the Nassau County Police Department told Newsday [paid link] that the incident was a murder-suicide.

Neighbor Gil Balanoff said the couple — a retired architect-engineer who loved fishing, and his wife, an avid tennis player — had lived for more than 25 years at Brower Oakview Condominium, a complex of about 45 townhomes.

Teen Arrested for Oceanside Robberies

A Long Beach teenager has been arrested in connection with three recent robberies in Oceanside, Nassau County Police said.

According to detectives, Frank Camporeale Jr., 16, was located on Austin Boulevard in Island Park Monday by Bureau of Special Operations officers and placed under arrest without incident.

Camporeale was reportedly involved in three pedestrian robberies that occurred in Oceanside on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, June 26 at 8:45 p.m. at 4001 Greentree Dr.

  • Thursday, June 27 at 9:30 p.m. at Oceanside Road and Carlton Court

  • Wednesday, July, 3 at 8:05 p.m. at Oceanside and Bennet Street

Cops: RVC Man Stole Cash from Yogurt Bar

A Rockville Centre man was arrested last Thursday after he allegedly broke into Pinkberry Yogurt Bar in Great Neck and stole money from the safe on June 13, cops said.

According to police, Robert Cosme, 22, broke in at 1:09 a.m. using the key he had when he was an employee there as shift manager. He had been fired three weeks earlier, authorities said.

He then opened the safe, cops said, and stole an unspecified amount of cash before fleeing the scene. He turned himself in at the Third Precinct on Thursday at 12:40 p.m.

$4K Watch Stolen From Merrick Road Apartment

A complainant reported to police that an unknown person(s) entered their apartment, located at 528 Merrick Rd., and removed a Rolex watch valued at $4,000, a Dell laptop computer valued at $300 and $2,000 cash. The total amount of the loss is $6,300.00. The loss occurred between 10:15 p.m. and 10:57 p.m. on July 1.
