Crimes Nearby: Court Upholds Murder Conviction

The New York State Appeals Court on Thursday upheld a jury’s decision to convict Martin Heidgen of depraved indifference murder, after he killed a 7-year-old Lido Beach girl and a limousine driver when he drove drunk the wrong way on the Meadowbrook Parkway in 2005. 

The panel of seven judges voted 5-2 to uphold the decision after Heidgen’s attorney, Jillian Harrington, argued to the Appeals Court on Oct. 8 that his client was too intoxicated to be convicted of second-degree murder. Click here to read the full story.

Cops: Man Burglarized Hewlett Neck Home, Shoved Woman to the Ground

Police are searching for the man who broke into a Hewlett Neck home Saturday and shoved a woman to the ground before fleeing, cops said.

According to detectives, at 8:10 p.m., the man entered a residence on Woodmere Boulevard S. via the second floor window. A 56-year-old female victim confronted him and was shoved to the ground. Click here to read the full story.

Cops Investigating Attempted Citibank Robbery

Cops are searching for a man who reportedly tried to rob a Rockville Centre bank Thursday morning.

A man approached a teller at Citibank on Merrick Road and gave them a demand note, according to Nassau County Police. After a few seconds, the man left the bank without taking any cash, cops said. He left and headed north through the bank's rear parking lot, detectives reported. Click here to read the full story.

Mineola Postal Secretary Admits to Disability Fraud

A U.S. Post Office secretary from Mineola has admitted to charges that she fraudulently collected over $50,000 in disability payments since March 2012.

Zdena Hock, 65, was originally charged by the U.S. District Attorney's Office after she claimed that she sustained an injury to her back and neck while filing paperwork in January 2012 and was no longer able to carry out routine tasks. Click here to read the full story.

LIRR Worker Spared Jail Time for Disability Scam

Regina Walsh, 65, the former director of employee services, had previously testified in Manhattan Federal Court that she and retired conductor James Maher, 60, exaggerated their disabilities and identified two of the three persons on trial who are charged with being key perpetrators of the scam. Click here to read the full story.

Woman Accused of Negligence in Motorcycle Death

A New Hyde Park woman is being accused of the misdemeanor death of a motorcyclist which occurred in Vermont this past August.

On Oct. 29, Anne Lyons, 78, entered a plea of not guilty in Orleans Superior Court to a charge of careless or negligent operation of a vehicle. She is accused of causing the death of Daniel Sanderson, 37, on Route 5A in Westmore, VT on Aug. 30.Click here to read the full story.

Cops Hunt 2 Armed Robbers in Lynbrook

According to Nassau County Police, a 54-year-old woman was working at Smokers Choice in Lynbrook when she was approached by two men who demanded cash. One of the men had a handgun, cops said. The woman complied and gave the men personal items, cash, and lottery tickets, police reported. The men then fled on foot in an unknown direction. Click here to read the full story.

Man May Face Charges in Firefighter's Death

A man who accidentally shot and killed a Malverne firefighter in a hunting accident this past weekend could be facing charges, according to reports.
