Crimes Nearby: Hit and Run Death in West Hempstead

Pedestrian Struck on Hempstead Turnpike Dies

A 23-year-old Massachussets man who was  in West Hempstead early Thursday morning has died from his injuries.

The victim was as Salem Enayetullah, a former Hofstra student who hailed from Massachusetts.

At approximately 12:10 a.m. the victim was seen crossing Hempstead Turnpike from north to south near Poplar Street wearing headphones when a car traveling eastbound on the busy road struck him. According to a witness, the car hesitated for a moment after hitting the victim, but then the driver continued eastbound and did not return.

Alleged Drunk Driver Hits Pedestrian in Rockville Centre

A pedestrian was critically after he was struck by an alleged drunk driver while crossing Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre on Wednesday night.

According to Nassau County police, the 25-year-old man was crossing north to south near North Centre Avenue when he was hit by motorist John Tobin, 23, of Freeport.

Tobin is charged with second-degree vehicular assault and two counts of Driving While Intoxicated. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday.

Cops Say Lakeview Teen Fled, Assaulted Officers

A who had officers searching by foot and air through West Hempstead after he was apparently seen attempting to break into two cars on June 14 now faces assault, resisting arrest and other charges.

The 16-year-old from Lakeview was nabbed by Nassau County cops around 4 p.m. on June 14 after a 15-minute pursuit that involved a police helicopter. According to police, he became violent and began flailing his arms, allegedly punching the officers to avoid arrest. During the struggle, a police officer reportedly sustained a minor injury, a dislocated finger.

The teen is being charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest, petit larceny (attempt) and two counts of third-degree criminal trespass. 

Arrests

  • On May 31 at 4:45 a.m., Anthony W. Cziuzas, 25, of Oceanside, was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by alcohol and third-degree assault (reckless) after striking a bicyclist at the intersection of N. Long Beach Rd./Oceanside Rd. The bicyclist was transported to SNCH where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
  • On May 31 at 6:52 p.m., Jose S. Larios, 47, of Brentwood, was arrested and charged with DWI and consuming an alcoholic beverage in a vehicle after he was observed drinking from an open container of an alcoholic beverage while he was driving eastbound on Sunrise Highway.
  • On June 2 at 11:34 a.m. Raquel Valerio-Cabrera, 32, of Valley Stream, was arrested and charged with petit larceny after she was observed shoplifting at CVS, located at 155 Sunrise Highway in RVC.
  • On June 3 at 7:26 p.m., Amine M. Fayad, 33, of Rockville Centre, was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief following a disturbance inside his home.
  • On June 3 at 11:49 p.m., Jennifer Radi, 38, of Rockville Centre, was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief following a disturbance inside her home.
  • On June 6 at 11:02 p.m., Francisco Herrera, 27, of Lynbrook, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana on Merrick Road in Lynbrook.
  • On June 7 at 4:24 p.m., Tiffany Cunningham, 28, of Springfield Gardens, N.Y., was arrested and charged with third-degree robbery. The alleged crime occurred at Sally’s Beauty Supply on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook.
  • On June 7 at 10:12 p.m., Li Ping Chen, 37, of Flushing, N.Y., was arrested and charged with prostitution at the Lynbrook Capri Motor Inn.
  • On June 7 at 10:20 p.m., Ralph Dename, 54, of East Rockaway, was arrested and charged with patronizing a prostitute at the Lynbrook Capri Motor Inn.
  • On June 10, a minor was arrested for attempting to steal merchandise from a store in Elmont. According to police, person tried to stop the robbery and was shoved and punched by the perpetrator.

Arson

  • On June 11, an unknown suspect set an abandoned red four-door Honda sedan on fire under the train tracks in Valley Stream. Local firefighters and MTA Police responded to the scene.

Thefts

  • On June 4 at 9:40 p.m., a Bellmore resident reported an unknown person broke the passenger side window of his 2009 Nissan and stole electronic items valued at over $1,000 while he was eating dinner inside TGI Fridays, located at 716 Sunrise Highway in Rockville Centre.
  • On June 4, parts were reported stolen from new vehicles parked at the Valley Stream Hyundai dealership on Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont.
  • On June 6, tires and rims were reported stolen from a car parked on Jefferson Street in West Hempstead.
  • Between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on June 8, a house on Centre Street in Lybrook was reported burglarized. The subject apparently entered through a rear window. Proceeds were a Nintendo Wii game console, jewelry and $700 in cash.
  • On June 8, a vehicle parked in the driveway of a home on Union Street in Valley Stream and motorcycle parked on John Avenue in Elmont were stolen.
  • On June 9, tires and rims were reportedly stolen from a car parked on Elm Street in Valley Stream.
  • On June 11, a home on Cerenzia Boulevard in Elmont was robbed.
