Lynbrook Police Warns Residents of Phone Scam

The Lynbrook Police Department on Wednesday warned residents of a phone scam that recently victimized several elderly Lynbrook residents.

Police said the victims receive a telephone call from a person pretending to be a grandson who was involved in an auto accident or some type of police involvement in Peru. The caller then requests that the victim wire money via Western Union to assist him with the problem.

The caller will beg and request that the victim not tell his parents or anyone else that he is in trouble. In each case, the caller provided enough information to convince the victim to wire the money, and one victim wired $4,000 to the scam artist in Peru, according to the press release.

Lynbrook police said that it is extremely important to obtain a call back number, hang up and verify the information provided by the caller with relatives before sending money. If it is a scam, and it probably is, the money will never be recovered, police said.

NYPD Officer From Lynbrook Wounded in Subway Shootout

An NYPD officer from Lynbrook was wounded in a subway shootout Tuesday afternoon in which the gunman was killed, according to reports.

Kevin Herlihy, who is reportedly a married father of three and an 18-year veteran of the NYPD assigned to the Queens violent felony squad, was shot in the arm after chasing the suspect, Michael McBride, who was wanted for the shooting of a woman in Queens.

Herlihy was released from the hospital on Wednesday, according to the Daily News.

McBride was fatally shot in the chest during the shootout. On Tuesday, McBride shot Shante Plowden, the 25-year-old daughter of his girlfriend, in a Far Rockaway building. She was expected to survive.

Police: West Hempstead Woman Witnessed Home Burglary

Three Queens men were arrested Tuesday after they allegedly broke into a home on Eagle Avenue in West Hempstead and stole jewelry while their victim hid in a closet.

A 36-year-old woman had been inside her home around 1:20 p.m. on Feb. 14 when she heard banging on the front door and the doorbell ringing, according to Nassau County detectives. The woman looked outside and saw a man she did not recognize, so she did not open the door.

Minutes later, a second male walked up the victim’s driveway. She then heard a loud banging at her rear door, so she ran upstairs to her bedroom and hid in a closet, while on the phone with a family member who called police. She then heard the defendants ransacking her room.

When officers from the Fifth Precinct arrived, they heard a loud noise in the rear yard, which they soon learned were two of the defendants jumping the fence in an attempt to flee.

Police arrested Shakey Foster-Bey, 24, Johan M. Antney, 21, both of Queens, and Carl S. Brown, 23, of Jamaica.

No injuries were reported. Police said the jewelry that had been taken from the home was recovered.
