Crimes Nearby: Patient Drowns, Burglaries and Shots Fired

A rundown of crimes that occurred in areas surrounding the Five Towns during the past week.

The following information was supplied by the Nassau County, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre and Long Beach police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

Man Steals Jewelry From Teen Girls in Valley Stream

Two teenage girls were robbed of their jewelry in Valley Stream Friday night by a man in his thirties and wearing dark clothes, according to police.

At around 8:30 p.m. Friday, the two victims, ages 16 and 15 years old, were walking east on Merrick Road when they walked past the suspect. The man grabbed the older girl and forcibly removed her necklace from her neck, police said. He then took a necklace and ring from the 15 year old. The suspect fled on foot west on Merrick Road. No injuries were reported.

A gold-plated sterling silver chalice was stolen from a back-room closet in St. Agnes, officials said. The value of the chalice is unknown.

According to Nassau County Detectives, a complainant from St. Agnes reported that an unknown subject, without permission, removed the chalice from a rear closet. The chalice is described as gold-plated sterling silver with a crystal node and platinum cross with a female wedding band attached. It was last seen on Sept. 22.

The chalice has an inscription from 1962 stating: "Dear Jimmy Love Mom and Dad."

A patient at Long Beach Medical Center drowned Wednesday evening after he left the hospital and jumped into Reynolds Channel.

According to Richard Corbett, chief of the Long Beach Fire Department, the LBFD was alerted at 10:25 p.m. on Sept. 28 about a person that ran out of the hospital’s emergency room and jumped into the bay behind the building on East Bay Drive.

Corbett said that man was removed from the water, CPR was administered and he was wheeled into the emergency room from the dock behind the hospital, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police: Brooklyn Man Found With Stolen Goods from V.S. Burglaries

A Brooklyn man was arrested on Wednesday after police allegedly found him with the proceeds from two burglaries in Valley Stream, according to detectives.

At around 3:15 p.m. on Sept 28, Justin Brumell, 26, was allegedly seen by a witness in the backyard of a residence on Charles Street and entering the home through a rear window, police said. He then apparently took assorted jewelry and fled. Police officers found him on Hook Creek Boulevard and arrested him. At that time, cops found jewelry from two burglaries committed that day.

Brumell is charged with burglary in the second degree and three counts of criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree.

Shots Fired Onto Vehicle on Sunrise Highway, Police Say

A subject in a red- or orange-colored Dodge Challenger fired multiple gunshots at another vehicle last Monday in Valley Stream, according to police.

Officers responding to a call for shots fired on Sept. 27 at 12:16 a.m. in the vicinity of Central Avenue and West Jamaica Avenue found multiple gunshot casings, police said. A witness at the scene told police that the Dodge Challenger was following a dark-colored Nissan Exterra. The subject then opened fire on the Exterra.

Both vehicles were last seen turning on to Sunrise Highway, with the Nissan heading east and the Dodge heading west. No further descriptions of the vehicles or occupants are available and no injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

A sixteen-year-old male complainant from Banks Avenue in Rockville Centre reported to police on Sept. 19 that he was robbed by four unknown males in the vicinity of North Forest Avenue in Rockville Centre. The victim sustained minor injuries (finger laceration/hip pain). The subjects stole his backpack, necklace, cell phone and $5.

Arrests

  • Robert F. Davis, 26, of Rockville Centre, was arrested on Sept. 16 and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree assault (two counts) and resisting arrest following a police investigation on South Village Avenue and Municipal Parking Field No. 6 in Rockville Centre. Two police anti-crime personnel were injured (back/ankle) while effectuating the arrest of defendant.
  • Robert G. Salesman, 21, of Baldwin, was arrested on Sept. 17 and charged with driving while intoxicated and VTL violations after being observed operating a motor vehicle in the vicinity of Sunrise Highway and Oceanside Road in Rockville Centre.
  • Robert Foders, 46, of Lynbrook, was arrested on Sept. 19 on Blossom Heath Avenue and charged with obstructing governmental administration and harassment.
  • Kimberly Murphy, 26, of Lynbrook, was arrested on Sept. 19 on Hempstead Avenue and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Christopher Nostramo, 24, of Malverne, was arrested on Sept. 21 and charged with giving a false statement. Nostramo allegedly falsely reported that he was robbed of a cell phone, a wallet, $30 and a bottle of Oxycodone on Ocean Avenue by two male blacks.
  • Diana Burns, 32, of Baldwin, was arrested on Sept. 21 on Broadway on an open warrant for criminal possession of a hypodermic needle, possession of controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.
