Crimes Nearby: Swimmer Drowns, Two RVC Robberies, Jogger Beaten

A rundown of crimes that occurred in areas surrounding the Five Towns during the past week.

The following information was supplied by the Nassau County, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre and Long Beach police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

A swimmer drowned in the ocean in Long Beach on Saturday afternoon.

According to Richard Corbett, chief of the Long Beach Fire Department, a 39-year-old male swimmer was in distress in the ocean off Edwards Boulevard beach at about 4:11 p.m., when the LBFD received the call about the incident.

The missing swimmer, who was indentified only as a non-Long Beach resident, was located about 30 minutes later, pulled from the ocean in cardiac arrest and transported to the by an Island Park ambulance with LBFD paramedics aboard. Soon after, he was pronounced dead at LBMC.

Nassau County Police are investigating a second robbery that occurred early Friday morning in Rockville Centre.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 4:30 a.m. two female victims, both 21 years old, and two male victims, ages 22 and 23, were walking in the vicinity of 100 N. Centre Ave. when they were approached by two black male subjects, one of whom pointed a black handgun at them and demanded their property, police said.

The suspects fled the scene on foot northbound on N. Centre Avenue toward Meehan Lane, police said. There were no injuries reported. The proceeds included assorted credit cards, assorted ID cards, a cellular telephone, two wallets, one handbag and an undetermined amount of U.S. currency.

Nassau County Police are investigating a robbery that occurred early Friday morning in Rockville Centre.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 3:30 a.m., a male victim, 21, was on N. Park Avenue when a black male with a shaved head, wearing a white T-shirt, approached him and asked to borrow his cell phone, to which the victim complied. The subject then punched the victim in the face and proceeded to walk north on N. Park Avenue.

Police said the victim followed the subject demanding his phone back when he was then struck in the face again by a second black male, approximately 5-foot-10, wearing a blue and white stripped shirt.

According to police, both subjects fled in an unknown direction with the phone. The victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

Long Beach Police Department detectives seek the public's help with their investigation into a beating and robbery on the boardwalk on Sept. 19.

According to LBPD Deputy Inspector Bruce Meyer, a male jogger was running at the 400 block of the east boardwalk when a group of about five youths attacked him at about 10:44 p.m. The youths surrounded the jogger, kicked and punched him and stole his iPhone. The jogger suffered abrasions to his knees and elbow.

The suspects are described as black males between the ages of 14 and 19, and fled the scene on foot and on bicycles.

Arrests

  • Brooklyn resident Ian Simon, 41, was arrested on Sept. 6 on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Dolores Gutierrez, 64, of Far Rockaway, was arrested on Sept. 8 for petit larceny following an investigation by police personnel at Home Goods, located at 150 N. Village Ave. in Rockville Centre.
  • Steven Lukes, 55, of Rockville Centre, was arrested on Sept. 9 for second-degree assault (two counts), second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and third-degree criminal trespass following a police investigation on Clinton Avenue that resulted in two police officers being injured. One police officer sustained a hand injury and second police officer sustained a knee injury while effectuating the arrest of the defendant.
  • Neil Amonson, 29, of Salt Lake City was arrested on Sept. 9 and charged with parachuting on the beach in a reckless manner at Edwards Boulevard beach.
  • Marshall Miller, 33, of Lehi, Utah, was arrested on Sept. 9 and charged with parachuting on the beach in a reckless manner at Edwards Boulevard beach.
  • Fernando Gonzalez, 56, of Long Beach, was arrested on Sept. 10 on Ocean Avenue in Lynbrook and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Matthew F. Micelli, 18, of Rockville Centre was arrested on Sept. 11 for second-degree criminal sale of marijuana following an investigation by police personnel on Merrick Road in Rockville Centre.
  • Mario Lombardo, 22, of Hewlett Harbor, was arrested on Sept. 12 on Union Avenue in Lynbrook and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.
  • Jared Goldberg, 22, of Long Beach was arrested on Sept. 14 and charged with driving while intoxicated at Lincoln Boulevard and East Beech Street.
  • Surinder Jakhu, of Bellrose, was arrested on Sept. 14 and charged with selling an alcoholic beverage to a minor after an investigation at the Mobil gas station on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead.
  • Vikas Brahmbhatt, of Flushing, was arrested on Sept. 14 and charged with selling alcohol to a minor after an investigation at the Shell gas station on Linden Boulevard in Elmont.
  • Harinder Singh, of New Hyde Park, was arrested on Sept. 14 and charged with selling an alcoholic beverage to a minor after an investigation at Quick Stop Mini Mart on New Hyde Park Road in Franklin Square.
  • Xim Chen, of Flushing, was arrested on Sept. 14 and charged with conducting multiple sales of alcohol after 8 p.m. — past the operating hours permitted by Nassau County — after an investigation of Tudor Wine and Liquor on Elmont Road in Elmont.
  • Greg Storms, 44, of Oceanside was arrested on Sept. 15 and charged with driving while intoxicated on Lido Boulevard in Lido Beach.
  • Tiffany Welker, 25, of Oceanside was arrested on Sept. 19 and charged with driving while intoxicated at East Chester Street.
  • Aileen Fenton, 45, of Long Beach was arrested on Sept. 19 and charged with driving while intoxicated, driving through a red light and moving from a lane unsafely at West Park Avenue.
  • Aytac Caglayan, 37, of Elmont was arrested on Sept. 20 and charged with identity theft in Long Beach.
