Explosion Causes Fire at Inwood Home; Blaze at Woodmere House

Two incidents across Five Towns happen minutes apart.

A propane tank exploded near an Inwood home Thursday afternoon, causing two people to sustain burn wounds and the house to catch on fire, only minutes away from a blaze at a Woodmere home.

Elisa Hinken, who lives a block away from the scene at 22 Chesire Road, heard the explosion sometime around 2:50 p.m.

“It shook the ground,” she said, “three distinct explosions.”

The Inwood Fire Department fought the blaze along with multiple other departments. Nassau County Police were on the scene and are evacuating nearby homes.

The entire area around the scene, which still has no power, had sustained damage from flooding as a result of Hurricane Sandy last week.

Meanwhile, a two-story home at 557 Saddle Ridge Road caught on fire sometime around 2:55 p.m.

Firefighters from the Woodmere Fire Department along with other departments were on the scene.

There are currently no other details about either incident. This story will be updated if and when Patch gets more information.
