Fire Departments Respond to Chlorine Leak at HAFTR

Two school employees sent to hospital for treatment, according to fire official.

A chlorine leak at on Sunday caused the evacuation of three employees, two of which were transported to the hospital for treatment, according to a chief.

An employee opened a door in the pool area of the school on Sunday and was overwhelmed by a toxic plume, according to LCFD Second Deputy Chief Anthony Rivelli Jr. LCFD was notified of the leak at 11:48 a.m. Firefighters searched the building and evacuated the employees. Responders were at the scene for about three hours until the situation was brought under control.

Twenty LCFD firefighters and paramedics led by Rivelli responded to the incident with four trucks, Rivelli said. Units from the Inwood and Woodmere fire departments were also on hand to assist in evacuating and treating the employees. Crews from the Meadowmere Fire Department decontaminated firefighters exiting the area. Members of the Elmont Fire Department found a 150-pound chlorine tank inside that was the source of the leak.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal HAZMAT team and Nassau County Police Emergency Service Units also responded to mitigate the situation, according to Rivelli.
