Fire Put Out at Cedarhurst House Apartment

Mother and child were able to self evacuate.

A woman who woke up from a nap Wednesday afternoon found her Cedarhurst apartment on fire and evacuated with one of her children, according to a fire chief.

A call for the fire at the two-story home at 362 Pearsall Ave. came in around 2:16 p.m.

The second-floor apartment has smoke and fire damage, while there is some water damage to the first floor of the structure, according to John McHugh, first assistant chief of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department.

The Fire Marshal will soon conduct an investigation, although McHugh said the fire was not suspicious. The area got power back days ago, so the blaze was not storm-related, he added.

No injuries were reported.

The woman, her husband and five children were put in contact with the Red Cross for living arrangements.

About 50 firefighters from the Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Inwood, Woodmere and Hewlett fire departments responded to the scene. The Meadowmere Park Fire Department stood by for other calls.
