Firefighters Battle Causeway House Fire

Firefighters battled a blaze at a Lawrence home Friday night, where they had believed someone had been in the house, but fortunately that was not the case, according to fire officials.

The Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department was alerted to a report of a house fire at 21 Causeway just before 9 p.m., said Deputy Chief Anthony Rivelli. The department responded with 30 firefighters and six trucks.

Police officers on the scene told the firefighters that an occupant may be inside.

“Firefighters then forced open the front door and were encountered by heavy black smoke,” Rivelli said. “As hoselines were stretched firefighters began searching the interior of the home for occupants. Luckily no occupants were inside, and were out at the time.”

The fire was located in the kitchen on the first floor, extending to the second floor inside the walls. Firefighters knocked down the bulk of the flames quickly. The fire was under control in 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported. LCFD Chief John McHugh served as command on the scene.

The Inwood, Hewlett and Woodmere Fire Departments also responded. The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the origin of the blaze.
