Five Towns Auxiliary Police Unit Recognized by County

Five Towns volunteers put in the most hours in county.

Nassau County honored its auxiliary police last Thursday, with the volunteers of the Five Towns unit receiving the most accolades.

Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Dale and County Executive Ed Mangano, along with top police brass, came together to hail the accomplishments of the volunteer police assistants, who help out with traffic control, public events and other activities.

The Five Towns unit, made up of about 30 men and women, has logged more than 8,000 volunteer hours. It is one of the largest and most active auxiliary police units in all of Nassau.

The unit’s commanding officer, Capt. Danny Gluck, received the award for putting in the most hours out of anyone in the county.

Commendations and citations were presented to Five Towns officers ranging from length of service awards — Sgt. Steven Sherman for 20 years in the unit, Sgt. David Spier for 10 years, Pfc. Sheldon Glatt for 10 years — to amount of activity.
