Hempstead Man Busted for North Lawrence Burglary

Cops said alleged thief stole computer and other items before fleeing on foot.

A Hempstead man was arrested and charged on Monday with breaking into a North Lawrence house and stealing items such as a laptop and jewelry, according to police.

Rene Figueroa, 24, allegedly pried and broke open a window of a residence on Bernard Street at 11:50 a.m. and took the computer, jewelry, cash, keys and an iPod before fleeing on foot, police said. Detectives, using a description obtained from a witness, found Figueroa at Caryl Street and Mott Avenue getting into taxi and arrested him at 1:20 p.m. Officers recovered all of the stolen items and also found Figueroa to be in possession of marijuana and Xanax, police said.

Figueroa was charged with several burglary counts and criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
