Photos and story by Joseph Sperber, chief of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department

The Hewlett Fire Department responded to a car fire Saturday morning at 9:45 at the intersection of East Rockaway Road and Union Avenue.

A taxi cab carrying a passenger apparently had a mechanical problem with its engine and a fire broke out. Luckily, the occupants were able to exit the vehicle without injury. Nassau County Police had the road closed for 30 minutes until the fire was extinguished and the vehicle could be removed from the scene.
