Inwood Man Arrested for DWI After Crashing Into Gas Station

The defendant was allegedly driving without a license and had an unregistered vehicle.

An Inwood man was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with numerous driving violations including aggravated DWI after he allegedly crashed his car into a gas station and pinned an employee against the store's counter.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 12:30 a.m., Jorge Alvarenga, 37, was operating a 2002 Ford northbound on Henry Street. As the vehicle passed Burnside Avenue, it left the roadway striking barriers protecting gas pumps at the Mobil located at 605 Burnside Ave.

The vehicle continued into the building where a 46-year-old male attendant was working, police said. The victim was pinned between the vehicle and store counter.

Fourth Precinct police officers responded and the victim was transported to a local hospital, police said. He was admitted for his injuries and his condition is unknown at this time.

Two patrons were also present, but uninjured, police said.

An investigation revealed that Alvarenga was operating under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, police said. A 51-year-old male passenger in the defendant's vehicle was admitted to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the defendant's vehicle was impounded.

Alvarenga was charged with assault in the third degree, reckless endangerment in the second degree, aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation in thr third degree, suspended registration plates, uninsured motor vehicle and unregistered motor vehicle.

Alvarenga will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday.
