LIRR Train Strikes Car in Cedarhurst

No injuries after collision west of railroad station.

An LIRR train on the Far Rockaway branch struck a parked vehicle on the tracks in Cedarhurst early Wednesday evening, shutting down service for a couple of hours.

The crash occurred around 7:17 p.m. after a train coming from Far Rockaway struck the unoccupied car just west of the Washington Avenue crossing, according to Salvatore Arena, a spokesman for LIRR.

Although cars are permitted to park along the railroad tracks, there is no barrier preventing someone from parking too close to the tracks, according to sources on the scene. As the northbound train approached the parked car, it struck a portion that was protruding on the tracks. No one was in the vehicle at the time it was hit and police were trying to determine the location of the owner.

Power was shut down in both directions after the incident, Arena said. The car was taken off the tracks around 8 p.m. and the train, which was carrying 20 people, continued onward to Jamaica.

There were no injuries.
