Nassau County Police Record 87 DWI Arrests Over Thanksgiving

Arrest figure up over same period in 2009.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, R - Bethpage, and  Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey announced that officers apprehended 87 offenders for allegedly Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) over this Thanksgiving holiday period. The defendants were arrested for the period beginning 5 p.m. on Nov. 24 through 8 a.m. on Nov. 29.

For the same period last year 75 arrests were reported.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles website, a DWI is defined as having a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or higher or other evidence of intoxication. For drivers of commercial motor vehicles it is having .04 BAC or other evidence of intoxication.

Penalties for DWI arrests and convictions range from a mandatory minimum fine of $500 with a maximum jail term of 1 year and a mandatory revocation of one's driver's license for six months for a first offense, up to a $10,000 fine, maximum of 7 years in prison and having one's license revoked for at least 1 year for a third violation within a 10 year period.
